The school has run a ukulele club since 2013. It consists of between 10 and 15 children and is open to children in Key Stage 2. The school has its own set of ukuleles, allowing each child the opportunity to learn some basic chords. They then learn a range of songs, both old and new, to perform. At the end of each term a short concert is staged and parents and teachers are invited to celebrate the children’s achievements.
With a little practice, it is not too difficult to gain a basic mastery of some simple songs to play and sing. The children gain the experience of sharing their skills with others and take part in the end of term performance as part of our very own ukulele orchestra. Most of all, it's great fun!
Below are the basic chords that children learn first. They form the basis of many of the songs learned by the children who are part of the club.
Here are some pdf files of the songs to read or print off to give everyone an idea of the music we play at the club. You can see from the looks on the children's faces that they enjoy learning and performing on this remarkably versatile instrument. Next term, we will be working on some new songs for everyone to enjoy.
Four strings, four fingers...what could be simpler?
