Modern Foreign Languages (MfL)
Why French?
Buckingham Park Primary School has chosen to teach French as their Modern Foreign Language; a language that is spoken by approximately 320 million people in all areas across the world. Additionally, as a close neighbour of England, France is a country likely visited by many of our families, and the ability to interact with people when visiting a foreign country is of great benefit.
How is French taught at Buckingham Park Primary School?
French is taught using the Primary Languages Network scheme of learning, which was in part, chosen for its strong cross-curricular links to other subjects, e.g. history, geography and science. Primary Languages Network also supports the learning of all learners and offers adaptations for children of varying levels of confidence and ability.
The Primary Languages Network scheme of learning progresses over four stages incorporating the core skills of learning - listening, speaking, reading and writing, with each stage building on and consolidating the previous stage, e.g. Stage 1 in Listening will focus on children understanding a few familiar spoken words in French, while the expectation in Stage 2 is that children can understand a range of familiar spoken phrases.
